Commission hopes to expand Marshall Co. Jail | News
MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- The Marshall County Commission wants to purchase an acre of land located behind the current jail for expansion.
The Commission will meet Tuesday morning to discuss the expansion.
The site currently houses the Public Works Department.
City officials have expressed interest in relocating.
That would clear the way for county officials to consider expanding the jail from 200 beds to nearly 500 beds.
County officials say first things first.
"What the sheriff and I are really looking at, we want to make sure we have enough land to footprint so when we do expand the jail, there will be enough room for expansion and the parking," said Commission Chairman James Hutcheson.
It is unknown at this time when the $12- to $18-million expansion would be built.
