GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- Some money funny business could bring state officials in for a takeover in Marshall County.
Revenue Commissioner Joey Masters is accused of wrongdoing after an audit was released last month.
On Wednesday, the county commission authorized assistance to the state, should they take over the office.
The November audit revealed Masters gave property tax breaks to himself and his family. The audit claimed Masters allowed two homestead exemptions for a family member, and masters reduced his own property value.
Masters said mistakes were made, but there was no criminal wrongdoing.
He said the exemptions were legal and the square footage on his property had been incorrectly assessed to begin with, and that it was a correction.
Commission Chairman James Hutcheson said they're prepared to assist if need be.
"Any type of personnel assistance, administrative assistance, provide extra budgets for extra people if they need it, extra training any kind of training they may need," he said.
There's no word if or when the state would plan such a takeover.
